- Book your transportHiring a van, borrowing one or booking a man and van? Pick the size from the table above and book it for your move-in day.
- Sort your insuranceCheck whether your home insurance covers things in storage, or take out storage cover. We don’t sell it; we recommend insurastore.com.
- Measure the big piecesSofa, wardrobe, fridge: check them against the width, depth and height on our size cards.
- Get your packing kit inBoxes, tape, bubble wrap, sofa and mattress bags. Amazon and B&Q are good for this.
- Defrost and drain your appliancesDefrost the fridge and freezer a couple of days before. Drain the washing machine and empty the tumble dryer’s water tank, so everything is dry on the day.
- Take beds and tables apartPut the screws in a bag and tape it to the piece.
- Write a list of what’s going inHandy for insurance, and for finding things later.
- Keep back an “open first” boxThe things you’ll need straight away stay out of storage.
- 1Big and heavy at the backWardrobes, chests and white goods go against the back wall of the unit.
- 2Everyday things by the doorPaperwork, tools and seasonal kit you’ll want again stay at the front.
- 3Build up, not outStack sturdy boxes to the ceiling: heavy at the bottom, light on top.
- 4Label two sidesSo you can still read every box once it’s stacked.
- 5Fridges, freezers, washers and dryersDefrost and drain them and dry them out first, then leave the doors ajar.
- 6Nothing damp goes inDamp wooden garden furniture and plant pots with soil give off moisture that turns into condensation. Dry the furniture fully and empty the pots first.
- 7Cover the soft stuffSofas and mattresses go in proper sofa and mattress bags to keep dust and dirt off.
- 8Plastic boxes for longer staysStoring for more than a few months? Lidded plastic boxes last better than cardboard, and they stack higher without collapsing.
- 9A path to the backLeave a gap from the door so nothing gets buried.

About Bathampton
About Bathampton
Bathampton is a village on the south bank of the River Avon, east of Bath, with a parish population of 1,603; the Kennet and Avon Canal passes through it, and a toll bridge links it to Batheaston. Bathampton Camp, an Iron Age hill fort, lies to the east, and the parish was part of the hundred of Hampton. The slope above the village was heavily quarried for stone at what is now Bathampton Rocks, and Plasticine was made in the village between 1900 and 1983 by a company founded by William Harbutt, who also lived here.
Bathampton today
Above the village is Sham Castle, a folly built in 1762 by Richard James, Ralph Allen’s master mason, ‘to improve the prospect’ from Allen’s town house in Bath, and lit up at night. The Parish Church of St Nicholas has 13th-century origins, and its ‘Australia Chapel’ remembers Admiral Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Wales, who was buried in the church in 1814. In 2022 the National Trust bought most of Bathampton Meadows — wet meadows and an oxbow lake made for flood relief when the A46 bypass was built, and popular with migrant birds — and a walking route through them opened in September 2024. Moving in, clearing out or between homes — our Southwick storage facility is about 20 minutes away.
