About Chippenham
About Chippenham
Chippenham is a market town in north-west Wiltshire, at a crossing of the River Avon, with a parish population of 36,548 at the 2021 census. It is believed to have been founded by the Anglo-Saxons around AD 600, it was a royal vill under Alfred the Great, and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records it as Cippanhamme. The Great Western Railway arrived in 1841 and brought new businesses: in the middle of the 19th century the town was a major centre for dairy and ham products, which later brought Nestlé and Matteson’s factories to the town centre, and railway engineering began here in 1842 — the works were taken over by Westinghouse Brake and Signal in 1935, and the signalling business is now owned by Siemens.
Chippenham today
Street markets are held around the Market Place and High Street every Friday and Saturday, with the Buttercross — first put up around 1570 and re-erected in 1995 — at the centre of the pedestrianised town centre, near the medieval timber-framed Yelde Hall and Chippenham Museum. Chippenham station, famous for Brunel’s railway arches, has inter-city trains to London Paddington and Bristol, and the A350 bypasses the town to the west. Wincanton moved its head office to Methuen Park in 2005, the Olympiad Leisure Centre has pools and a gym, and Chippenham Town F.C. play in the National League South. The Chippenham Folk Festival takes place every year, usually over the Whitsuntide weekend. Moving in, clearing out or between homes — our Southwick storage facility is about 30 minutes away.
