About Winsley
Winsley is a large village west of Bradford on Avon, and the parish includes the hamlets of Conkwell, Turleigh, Little Ashley and Great Ashley. It is first recorded, as Winesley, in 1242, although the name is Saxon in origin. Stone quarrying became important from the 18th century — from 1803 stone for the canal was carried by wagons down a wooden railway from Murhill — and the 1841 census found 105 labourers working in the Winsley quarries. Winsley Sanatorium opened in 1905 on the hilltop site of a former quarry, for the fresh air thought to help treat tuberculosis; it closed in 1982, and Avonpark retirement village was built there in 1994.
Winsley today
Old Winsley — its manor house, 17th-century houses and artisans’ cottages, with the village hall, St Nicholas’ church, a Methodist church and a bowls club around the village pub — sits beside the newer Tyning and Church Farm estates, where a GP practice stands next to the Church of England primary school. Winsley House is home to the Dorothy House hospice charity, Winsley Cricket Club overlooks the Avon Valley, and the Kennet and Avon Canal crosses the river on the Avoncliff and Dundas aqueducts within the parish. A relief road completed in 1997 took the B3108 away from the village’s narrow roads, and the D1 bus links Winsley with Bath, Trowbridge and Warminster.
