About Beckington
Beckington is a Somerset village across the River Frome from Lullington, north of Frome; the parish, which includes the hamlets of Rudge and Standerwick, had a population of 983 at the 2011 census. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and in the medieval period it was a major centre for the wool trade, with fulling mills built along the River Frome by the 15th century to serve the spinning and weaving cottage industries. During the Laudian Reforms of Charles I’s Personal Rule, two Beckington churchwardens were excommunicated in 1635 for refusing to move the altar against the east wall of the church. The antiquary John Aubrey noted in his Brief Lives that carrots were first sown at Beckington, and Thomas Beckington, who became Bishop of Bath and Wells, was born in the village.
Beckington today
Beckington was on the A36 until a bypass was built in 1989. The Church of St George, dating from the 14th century, is Grade I listed, as is Seymours Court Farmhouse, a 15th-century house that was once the home of Thomas Seymour, who married Queen Catherine Parr. Next to Beckington Castle, the 16th-century Wool Hall was a recording studio from the early 1980s until 2004 — Tears for Fears set it up, and Van Morrison owned it from 1994 to 2002. The village has a Church of England first school, built in 1852, and Springmead Preparatory School; the Woolpack Inn first opened as a coaching inn in the 16th century; and the hamlet of Standerwick is home to the Frome Agricultural Market. Moving in, clearing out or between homes — our Southwick yard is about 3 minutes away.
