About Wingfield

Wingfield is a small Wiltshire village west of Trowbridge and south of Bradford-on-Avon, where the River Frome forms most of the border with Somerset. It is mentioned in a charter of 954, and the Domesday Book of 1086 records a settlement named Winefel with 12 households and a mill. From at least the early 13th century until the Dissolution the manor was linked to Keynsham Abbey, and in the 19th century the name ‘Winkfield’ was also used. Midway Manor, in the north of the parish, was the late-18th-century home of Henry Shrapnel, inventor of the Shrapnel shell, and the writer Thomas De Quincey was educated at a private school in the village, run by the rector.

Wingfield today

Most of the homes are near the crossroads where the road from Bradford-on-Avon to Rode crosses the A366 from Trowbridge to Farleigh Hungerford. The parish church of St Mary, on the eastern edge of the village, has a 15th-century tower and is Grade II* listed, as is Stowford Manor, a late-15th-century farmhouse with a three-gable front. Wingfield House, begun in the early 18th century, was a hospital during the First World War and was divided into four homes soon after the Second. The village school, built in 1852, has been a satellite of The Mead Community Primary School at Hilperton since 2009, and the village pub is the Poplars Inn. Units run from 15 sq ft to a 160 sq ft (20 ft) container. As a rough guide: 15 to 20 sq ft takes boxes, a bike or the contents of a box room; 29 to 40 sq ft a one-bedroom flat or a garage clear-out; 80 sq ft the contents of a two- or three-bedroom house; 160 sq ft a large family home or business stock.
