About Rode

About Rode

Rode is a Somerset village within a mile of the Wiltshire border — the easternmost settlement in the county — north-east of Frome and south-west of Trowbridge, with the Wiltshire village of Southwick just to the north-east. It appears as ‘Rode’ in the Domesday Book; by the 18th century ‘Road’ was the usual spelling, and Somerset County Council reverted to ‘Rode’ in 1919. The name comes from the Anglo-Saxon rod, a clearing, and the village grew from an early crossing point of the River Frome: by 1250 it had the right to hold a weekly market and annual fair, and in the 16th and 17th centuries four or five wool mills made it rich. When a consortium of Rode mills won a competition to make a robe for Queen Charlotte, a business in the village invented the dye Royal Blue.

Rode today

Rode is now largely a dormitory village, with good access to Bristol, Bath, Trowbridge and Frome. The Church of St Lawrence, from the late 14th and early 15th centuries, is Grade I listed, and a three-arch packhorse bridge crosses the River Frome. Facilities include a village school and pre-school, a shop and post office, a chocolate factory, a recreation ground and a cricket club founded in about 1895, and the pubs are the Mill — in one of the old mill buildings — the Cross Keys and the Bell. Rode Hill, north-east of the village and now joined to it, was transferred from Wiltshire to Somerset in 1937. Moving in, clearing out or between homes — our Southwick storage facility is about 3 minutes away.
